  English is present in every continent and absent in none . (Wow, what a statement!) Algo que es importante recordar al momento de aprender un idioma como el inglés es no desconocer el hecho de que todo lenguaje está asociado a un componente cultural propio. En otras palabras, cuando aprendemos un idioma también debemos aprender la cultura que está conectada al mismo.   Esto podría ser difícil al considerar que al Inglés se lo habla en varias partes del mundo como los Estados Unidos, el Reino Unido, Australia y Nueva Zelandia e incluso hay una república en Centroamérica llamada Belice donde el idioma oficial también es el Inglés. ¿Qué podemos hacer? En este caso hay que recordar que no es necesario aprender la cultura de un punto específico. Lo que se debe entender es que las personas que hablan un idioma pueden tener ideas diferentes, procesos lógicos, razonamientos y costumbres que a nosotros nos podrían parecer extraños. Debemos estar abiertos a estas situaciones porque solo así

"Oh, I really like that Adela singer...I mean, Adele" S e dice que algo que no se puede derrotar son los hábitos, pues una vez que han sido creados es muy difícil eliminarlos. Esto puede ser usado en favor nuestro. Usted debe separar una parte del día para dedicarlo a hacer cosas que le gustan y, a más de eso, parte de ese tiempo debe destinarlo a su aprendizaje del Inglés. Lo recomendable es que lo haga todos los días. Busque algo que le guste y no algo que le ha sido impuesto. Cada persona es diferente y quien mejor le conoce, y lo que le gusta, suele ser usted mismo. Las opciones son muchas y lo único que no nos podemos permitir es ser indolentes y no hacer nada. Una vez que usted ha creado este hábito también ha integrado exitosamente el Inglés a su vida porque los hábitos, tal como se dijo ya antes, son poco menos que invencibles.

"Really? You don't say..." No se equivoque, la naturaleza tiene una cierta manera de hacer las cosas. Por eso cuando aprendemos el idioma materno es en gran parte porque estamos constantemente expuestos al mismo. La diferencia al aprender otro idioma es que a menos que vivamos en un país donde ese otro idioma sea también de uso común las oportunidades de encontrar esa exposición son muy pocas. ¿Qué podemos hacer? Nada sino crear nosotros mismos las oportunidades que nos faltan. Entre las cosas que podemos hacer están: -Escuchar música en Inglés. -Ver su programa favorito en Inglés luego de haberlo visto en Español. Esto se puede hacer en particular si se cuenta con un servicio de streaming. -Colocar motivos o frases en Inglés en lugares donde pueda verlos todos los días. Hay por supuesto más cosas, pero lo mejor es comenzar siempre sin apuros, con la mirada puesta en un objetivo claro y del modo más natural posible.

The idea is that the meanings of both terms contribute to creating a new one that ties to the words that were used for this purpose, e.g. windshield = a shield to protect you from the wind. Amusing? Perhaps. Practical? Definitely! And ALPISTE is no exception. In English, it is BIRDSEED or CANARY SEED.

Una de las consideraciones más importantes que debe hacer al momento de comenzar su aprendizaje del inglés es quién va a estar a cargo de liderar ese aprendizaje: ¿Usted? ¿Otras personas?  Si lo va a hacer usted, debe convertirse en un autodidacta es decir una persona capaz de enseñarse a sí mismo sin la ayuda de otras personas y a quien le basta con tener los recursos adecuados para crear sus propias estrategias de aprendizaje. Para ser un autodidacta debe además ser una persona muy responsable y extremadamente comprometida con la decisiones que toma. ¿Es usted ese tipo de persona? Al ir a una academia de inglés está encomendando su aprendizaje a alguien más. ¿Es esto malo? Lo es sólo si comete el mismo error que cometen muchos al comenzar su aprendizaje en uno de estos sitios. Recuerde que usted está dándole una misión importante a estas personas la cual es enseñarle a usted. Si ha escogido un instituto que ha ex

" Mhhh, esta pantalla está bien pretty. " No es necesario que usted vaya a una academia de inglés para que aprenda este idioma.  Hay otras opciones. Una de esas opciones a considerar es el aprendizaje online o en línea que tiene sus ventajas como tiene sus desventajas. El ir a una academia de inglés implica que también va a aprender junto a otras personas lo cual puede causar distracciones innecesarias. Cuando usted aprende en línea lo hace de una manera más focalizada. Generalmente el aprendizaje es face to face  como se dice en inglés, uno a uno en español, usted y la persona que le está capacitando. La ventaja más obvia es que su profesor puede enfocarse en sus necesidades específicas. Recuerde que usted es un ser único y que no necesariamente aprende de la misma manera o al mismo ritmo que las demás personas. Si el profesional que le enseña está debidamente capacitado,dentificará sus fortalezas y debilidades y elaborará una estrategia de aprendizaje que responda a sus nec

"¿Cuál? ¿cuál?"     Si usted ha tomado la decisión de aprender inglés sin duda se ha  planteado la posibilidad de ir a algún centro de idiomas donde pueda captar el idioma. Es posible que haya muchas opciones en el lugar donde vive sobre todo si es una ciudad densamente poblada. Generalmente los institutos de idiomas tienen la tendencia a concentrarse en lugares con mayor población, pero también ciudades pequeñas pueden contar con excelentes academias. De no ser así, podría considerar la posibilidad de aprender el inglés mediante el uso de algún servicio online. Antes de elegir una academia de inglés averigue si esta tiene un prestigio bien ganado. ¿Hay testimonios de personas que han estudiado ahí, se han graduado y luego han usado con éxito lo que aprendieron? Si es así entonces ese podría ser el lugar que está buscando. Claro que hay otras consideraciones que hacer como cuánto usted puede pagar por ejemplo.  -No es necesario pagar demasiado para aprender inglés, pero tampo

When a LAYOVER becomes a Sleepover A LAYOVER is a stop or tranfer from one plane to the next in your flight itinerary. It's similar to a Stopover, but it's not necessarily the same. LAYOVERS can last thirty minutes or up to five hours. Beyond that the term Stopover is more often used. In Spanish we don't have any specific word for what a LAYOVER is since we make no difference between a LAYOVER and a Stopover. They are the same: one is shorter, the other is longer. For both we use the same word, ESCALA. 

"Hey, are we friends already?" "Nope, still only ACQUAINTANCES" An ACQUAINTANCE is a person we know, someone we may say hello to, somebody who we are on friendly terms with. But that's it. A person may be your ACQUAINTANCE for years and never become your friend. It is the same in most Spanish-speaking countries where a friend is an Amigo and an ACQUAINTANCE is a CONOCIDO.  "An old ACQUAINTANCE" and "an ACQUAINTANCE of mine" are common expressions that go into Spanish as "Un viejo CONOCIDO" y un "CONOCIDO mío".

It's not an ad, just a COMBO. The common definition of this term tells us that it is a derivation of sorts of the word Combination. It is essentially a business term created to entice our secret desire to spend our money on things we don't need. In a combo, you get not just one item, but two or three and though you pay a little bit more this is less than if you had acquired each item separately. In other words, you pay more, but you also get more. Sounds like a good deal, doesn't it? Perhaps that is why COMBOS are so popular. There is not a word for COMBO in Spanish so we also say COMBO in Spanish. We may say COMBINACIÓN, but it is not necessarily the same. UNA OFERTA ESPECIAL is another option, but again it is not exactly the same thing. BTW, the word COMBO also means a small musical group. There is a famous Puerto Rican group called El Gran Combo that plays Caribbean music.

"Oooppss, sorry, that was me" VERRACO in English is BOAR, a wild pig. These animals tend to have a powerful smell, in particular, the males that have reached puberty. Therefore, this old expression refers precisely to people who have the unhealthy habit of not bathing regularly. Literally APESTAR A BERRACO is not TO STINK LIKE A BOAR, it is just STINK or variations that use such word such as: TO STINK TO HIGH HEAVEN (many others are unpublishable).  Another alternative is to say someone has a B.O. (BAD ODOR). A variation of the same expression is OLER A CHIVO (GOAT).

What's a SWANK? Well, I'm one. I'm Hillary Swank! SWANK is one of those English words that can be either an adjective, a noun or a verb. Luckily, the meaning remains the same. Something that is SWANK is usually ostentatious, flashy, a bit too elegant or proud, but it may also be just smart. When used as a verb this word means Show Off, so the idea is not that different, is it? FANFARRONEAR, when this word is a verb, and FANFARRÓN if it is a noun or an adjective are good translations in Spanish.  In Informal Guayaquilean Spanish we would say SACAR LAMPARA (v) or LAMPAROSO (n).

"Hmm, why do I have this nagging feeling that someone is watching me watching?" In Spanish, a MIRADOR is any place that allows a privileged view of the surroundings. In English, a MIRADOR is a VIEWPOINT or a LOOKOUT. Another possible translation is VANTAGE POINT, though in a tourist context this term is a bit less common.

The result of SHORTLISTING all the suitable candidates to become our  next president. A SHORTLIST is that precisely a: short list, one with the names of people who are participating in some sort of competition and have been deemed suitable. It can also been a verb, so you can say things such as "SHORLISTED candidates". In Spanish, we say SELECCION or SELECCIONAR, but it´s not necessarily the same. To say LISTACORTA or LISTACORTAR would not make much sense to us.

"See, Mom? I STUBBED my big toe again. I need to wear shoes!" When you accidentally strike your big toe, or any of your other toes or fingers, against something else that is called MACHUCAR (not to confuse with Machacar). The word in English is TO STUB.  The essential difference is that STUB is a verb and a noun, but as a noun, it has a different meaning: it is the what is left after a cigarette or a pencil after being used. MACHUCAR, the verb, or MACHUCON, the noun, is pretty much the same.

A DISINGENUOUS act indeed. DISINGENUOUS means Not Sincere. Anyone who gives a false appearance of frankness falls into that description.  Easily, DISINGENUOUS could be used to describe what a politician is like, since most of them are exactly that: DISINGENUOUS. In Spanish the word would be FINGIDO, FALSO, DESHONESTO.

"Yes, I FEEL LAZY TODAY, but then again I feel the same way all the time!" Sometimes when we translate into English we get to notice how practical English is when compared to Spanish and perhaps other languages as well. NO TENGO GANAS DE HACER NADA HOY is made up by seven words, but the same can be said in English with only four: I FEEL LAZY TODAY.  Of course, there are other options, and we could also say I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING TODAY, but it's not necessarily the same.

"Sorry, what? No, not everything I wear is made of Denim.  My underwear for example..." When in Ecuadorian Spanish we use the term JEAN we refer to either the trousers everyone calls JEANS or the material such trousers are made of.  In other words, when we refer to pieces made of the same material as the trousers made famous by Levi's company so long ago. The correct term in Spanish for such material is MEZCLILLA which in English is DENIM. Then the right way to translate "CHAQUETA JEAN" is not really Jean Jacket but DENIM JACKET. 

"I'm Stan Lee, current King of Cameos. Even this is a cameo,. Right, girls?" UNA BREVE APARICION can indeed be translated as A BRIEF APPEARANCE, but that is not its most common use. A CAMEO APPEARANCE  or just A CAMEO refers to people appearing unexpectedly in a movie or TV production as themselves or playing a very short role. Sometimes their names are included in the list of credits at the end, and sometimes they are not.  The term CAMEO does not only involve the situations described above, but it may also extend to other instances as well such as regular books, comic strips and of course comic books where CAMEOS happen all the time.
