"Can I be held ACCOUNTABLE for all these lightbulbs?" ACCOUNTABILITY is said to translate as RESPONSABILIDAD, and it is but not completely. For example, Ecuadorian politicians use ploys to avoid ACCOUNTABILITY for their actions . In Spanish: Los políticos ecuatorianos usan tácticas para evitar RESPONSABILIDAD por sus acciones . This translation is only acceptable because it is somewhat lacking. A much better option would be: Los políticos ecuatorianos usan tácticas para evitar HACERSE RESPONSABLES de sus acciones . HACERSE RESPONSABLE DE ALGO, ACEPTAR or ASUMIR RESPONSABILIDAD POR ALGO express more accurately in Spanish the real meaning of this word in English.      

"GEE! If I get any closer I'll fall down and drown!" GEE is an interjection mostly used in the United States that expresses mild astonishment, and it is little by little becoming archaic because fewer people are using it these days.  In Spanish, there are two interjections that are close in meaning and they are CARAMBA and CARAY. Just like GEE, these two words are becoming archaic in Spanish as well. Though not necessarily the same in meaning, these expressions are also possible: SANTO DIOS or DIOS MÍO. Funny, but also quite rare these days (you will find it only in the funny pages), there is also RECÓRCHOLIS.  

"I'm pregnant, not EMBARRASSED."      This is one of those situations when you must be careful if you are translating. The word EMBARRASSED is quite similar to another one in Spanish: Embarazada.  If one word in a language is spelled similarly to another one in Spanish and the meaning of both is the same, we call that a Cognate.  If the meaning is different, we call that a False Cognate. Embarazada is a False Cognate because it translates as Pregnant, not EMBARRASSED. The correct translation of EMBARRASSED in Spanish is AVERGONZADA or AVERGONZADO.

"A ver si Face es Cara y Book es Libro entonces Facebook es... ¿Caralibro?" E l término investigador cultural se refiere aquí a los estudiantes de inglés que además de aprender un idioma también deben adquirir el bagaje cultural conectado al mismo.  N o podemos pensar que en otros países las tradiciones y las costumbres son iguales a las nuestras. "Do you want to talk like me? Bazinga!"     C uando hablamos, lo hacemos como nuestros padres. Al crecer todos tratamos de integrarnos al medio que nos rodea, y para ello necesitamos comunicarnos. Los códigos de la comunicación, lo que es el lenguaje en sí, los tomamos de quienes nos rodean en esos momentos, es decir nuestros padres (o los adultos que estén encargados de nuestra crianza) quienes se vuelven los más importantes y a veces, los únicos modelos que tenemos a seguir.       P or ello, una estrategia plausible para usar en el aprendizaje de un idioma extranjero es entender que ese especie de Juego de Imitación es necesario en este contexto. Busque un modelo a seguir . Su profesores serían una buena elección, pero su permanencia es eventual, estamos con ellos lo que dura el curso que estemos tomando.     ¿ T iene un artista favorito de habla inglesa? " Uer ar mai shus?  ¿Será que así se dice?"       S e dice que la señal definitiva de que usted ya conoce un idioma es que piensa y hasta sueña en tal idioma. Por experiencia propia les puedo decir que hasta eso suceda pasarán muchos años. ¿Se puede acortar ese tiempo? Sí y se lo puede hacer desde el primer día, incluso. Para hablar en inglés usted necesita perder la verguenza a hacerlo. Nada más. Comience repitiendo las expresiones que su profesor le enseñó ese día y hágalo siempre frente a un espejo y con la idea de que se está preparando para una obra de teatro. Para pensar en Inglés no espere que esto se de inconscientemente. Haga un esfuerzo consciente de pensar en Inglés. Por ejemplo, cuando esté buscando sus zapatos en lugar de pensar: "¿Dónde están mis zapatos?" Digase en su mente: "Where are my shoes?" Haga esto varias veces al día cual si hiciera un ejercicio de tipo físico. Acostumbre a su mente al Inglés.

  The word GREA exists according to the picture. It probably means GRANDIO.  Hay conocimientos que debemos saber y nunca olvidar cuando queremos dominar otro idioma. En la entrada anterior ya se señaló la importancia del alfabeto. Apréndalo de memoria y sea particularmente exigente al pronunciar cada letra de manera correcta. Y deletree cuantas veces pueda sin importar si la palabra que está deletreando es del idioma inglés o del español. Por sobre todo debe poder deletrear sus nombres y apellidos. Aprenda los números cardinales. Hagalo de manera progresiva: del 1 al 20, del 21 al 40, y así. Los números en Inglés (sus nombres) poseen particularidades propias, pero su nivel de dificultad no es mayor que el aprendizaje de los números en Español. Una vez que sepa ya los números, siga con las operaciones

  English is present in every continent and absent in none . (Wow, what a statement!) Algo que es importante recordar al momento de aprender un idioma como el inglés es no desconocer el hecho de que todo lenguaje está asociado a un componente cultural propio. En otras palabras, cuando aprendemos un idioma también debemos aprender la cultura que está conectada al mismo.   Esto podría ser difícil al considerar que al Inglés se lo habla en varias partes del mundo como los Estados Unidos, el Reino Unido, Australia y Nueva Zelandia e incluso hay una república en Centroamérica llamada Belice donde el idioma oficial también es el Inglés. ¿Qué podemos hacer? En este caso hay que recordar que no es necesario aprender la cultura de un punto específico. Lo que se debe entender es que las personas que hablan un idioma pueden tener ideas diferentes, procesos lógicos, razonamientos y costumbres que a nosotros nos podrían parecer extraños. Debemos estar abiertos a estas situaciones porque solo así

The idea is that the meanings of both terms contribute to creating a new one that ties to the words that were used for this purpose, e.g. windshield = a shield to protect you from the wind. Amusing? Perhaps. Practical? Definitely! And ALPISTE is no exception. In English, it is BIRDSEED or CANARY SEED. 

" Mhhh, esta pantalla está bien pretty. " No es necesario que usted vaya a una academia de inglés para que aprenda este idioma.  Hay otras opciones. Una de esas opciones a considerar es el aprendizaje online o en línea que tiene sus ventajas como tiene sus desventajas. El ir a una academia de inglés implica que también va a aprender junto a otras personas lo cual puede causar distracciones innecesarias. "¿Cuál? ¿cuál?"     Si usted ha tomado la decisión de aprender inglés sin duda se ha  planteado la posibilidad de ir a algún centro de idiomas donde pueda captar el idioma. Es posible que haya muchas opciones en el lugar donde vive sobre todo si es una ciudad densamente poblada. Generalmente los institutos de idiomas tienen la tendencia a concentrarse en lugares con mayor población, pero también ciudades pequeñas pueden contar con excelentes academias. De no ser así, podría considerar la posibilidad de aprender el inglés mediante el uso de algún servicio online. Antes de elegir una academia de inglés averigue si esta tiene un prestigio bien ganado. ¿Hay testimonios de personas que han estudiado ahí, se han graduado y luego han usado con éxito lo que aprendieron? Si es así entonces ese podría ser el lugar que está buscando. Claro que hay otras consideraciones que hacer como cuánto usted puede pagar por ejemplo.  -No es necesario pagar demasiado para aprender inglés, pero tampo

Well, it's not Netflix, but something is STREAMING.   STREAMING refers to a transmission of information   in     the form of videos, images, listening tracks or plain text.   In meaning it is similar to Flowing since originally the   term referred to how current water moved from its source   to its final destination, hence the analogy that gave it a   new meaning.  In Spanish the term would be TRANSMISIÓN, but for some reason many prefer and keep the English term and say Streaming. Quite often some of them even mispronounce the word and add an extra vowel before the initial S of the word which is the same vowel sound as in the word pen. 

"No...we're not here to enforce the CURFEW. We lost some money. Have you seen it?" When people have to remain off the streets for a number of hours (usually at night) we call that TOQUE DE QUEDA. This law is usually temporary in nature and is issued during times of civil unrest or some other reason of an equal status. This entry, for example, was written shortly after. the Coronavirus outbreak in Ecuador which led to a TOQUE DE QUEDA. Unlike Spanish, in English to say TOQUE DE QUEDA you only need one word: CURFEW.

"Wait! I''m a Gringa. I'm not supposed to be in this MINGA. Uh! Never mind...." A MINGA DE LIMPIEZA is basically community work to clean or improve the surroundings of the place where you live. It is not mandatory to participate though you are expected to do so. MINGAS play a social role in the community. They strenghen the habit of sharing and give a stronger sense of purpose to the community. Practiced in several Latin american countries, they usually end up with food for all those who pitched in. There is no direct translation for this word in English, FREE FARM LABOR or COMMUNITY WORK are closest in meaning.

"And how would they pronounce ALICATE in English? Aleekeit?" The word PLAYO doesn't really exist, at least not in standard Spanish.  It is a term mostly Ecuadorians use to refer to a tool that is known as ALICATE. Therefore, the title of this entry should be: "How do you say ALICATE in English?" I used the word PLAYO because it is an interesting example of a Barbarism, a word that is taken from one language and used in another keeping the original pronunciation, but oftentimes not the same spelling. ALICATE or PLAYO is PLIERS in English.

"This should be called Benchclicking and not BENCHMARKING." BENCHMARKING is a strategy mostly used in business to evaluate the performance of a company by comparing it with how another company, usually a more successful one, is doing. This other company then becomes the standard to be surpassed. BENCHMARKING is not only used in business but pretty much in every field where some improvement is needed. As such, BENCHMARKING cannot be put into one word in Spanish and the closest term in meaning would be something like EVALUACION COMPARATIVA. Perhaps the lack of a better term would explain why several Spanish-speaking businesspeople are also using the word in English to refer to this procedure.

As you can see, Nike now sells cellphones that MATCH your sneakers. MATCH is the most appropriate word. So if you want to say:  "Esa corbata HACE JUEGO CON tu camisa"  You could say:  "That tie MATCHES your shirt." Another option is: "That tie GOES WELL with your shirt." Notice that MATCH here is used as a verb and not a noun. When that is the case the meaning is different.

"Yes, I'm a RIGGER and a traffic officer" RIGGER is indeed an unusual word that is more in the technical field which probably explains why not everyone knows it. What RIGGERS do is prepare that system of wires and ropes that are generally used to support the structure of the masts in a ship right before it begins sailing. Similar instances, where also wires and ropes are used to allow the performance of some vehicles, are also called RIGGING such as certain airships or hang gliders. There is no word for RIGGER in Spanish and the closest term in meaning is APAREJADOR which is probably called something else from country to country. The word APAREJAMIENTO does exist, but it means something else and it's not a good translation for a RIGGERS do in their labor.

"Oh, the eternal rest! Great after such an EMBALMING experience!" EMBALMING is basically the preservation of a dead body. Unlike Mummification, EMBALMING does not require any organ to be extracted. In fact, the whole body is preserved and in some cases, the process, which requires more than just injecting a  fluid in the corpse, is so perfect that the dead people look pretty much as they looked before dying and seemed to be asleep. EMBALMING is EMBALSAMAR in Spanish.

"Oooppss, sorry, that was me" VERRACO in English is BOAR, a wild pig. These animals tend to have a powerful smell, in particular, the males that have reached puberty. Therefore, this old expression refers precisely to people who have the unhealthy habit of not bathing regularly. Literally APESTAR A BERRACO is not TO STINK LIKE A BOAR, it is just STINK or variations that use such word such as: TO STINK TO HIGH HEAVEN (many others are unpublishable).  Another alternative is to say someone has a B.O. (BAD ODOR). A variation of the same expression is OLER A CHIVO (GOAT).
