Consejos para Aprender Inglés (13): Conviertase en un Investigador Cultural


"A ver si Face es Cara y Book es Libro entonces Facebook es... ¿Caralibro?"

El término investigador cultural se refiere aquí a los estudiantes de inglés que además de aprender un idioma también deben adquirir el bagaje cultural conectado al mismo. 

No podemos pensar que en otros países las tradiciones y las costumbres son iguales a las nuestras. De hecho no lo son o son tan sólo similares. Por ejemplo, las festividades de Navidad y de Fin de Año son un buen comienzo para entender esos aspectos culturales que en un principio no comprendemos ni aceptamos precisamente porque no hemos intentado saber sobre los mismos.

¿Cómo se dice en inglés Nochebuena por ejemplo o Noche Vieja? ¿Y qué es lo que las personas que viven en países angloparlantes hacen en esos días? Ninguna de esas cosas es necesariamente como creemos que son, y muchas son bastante diferentes.

Entonces, esa es la investigación de la que se habla aquí: una investigación que nos lleva a conocer mejor a otras culturas y a las personas de otros países, lo que ellas hacen y cómo lo hacen para de esa manera entender también las estructuras del idioma que estamos tratando de aprender.

Debemos querer saber más que un idioma, también debemos llegar a esas personas con las que nos queremos comunicar y aprender de lo que ellas hacen y cuál es su vida. Debemos permitir que nuestra curiosidad vaya más allá del aprendizaje del idioma y hacernos de alguna manera un poquito más ciudadanos del mundo, más conscientes del planeta en que vivimos y de esas idiomas trascendentales que debemos aprender cuya lista sin dudarlo encabeza el idioma Inglés

Mister Bermudes, puesto que si queremos empezar a mejorar o aprender el Inglés, lo primero que tenemos que hacer es ilustrarnos acerca del contexto sociocultural,tal como usted nos indica, ya que eso nos permite sacar de nuestra mente ideas erróneas acerca de creencias, costumbres el poder ver más allá, nos abre la mente pero también nos hace enriquecedores de conocimientos valiosos. Sin duda alguna, el consejo que nos compartió mediante este medio tiene un fin sumamente importante y es: el ser un(a) buen inestigador, partiendo de allí nuestro proceso de aprendizaje en el Inglés.

Cada país, territorio o incluso parte de una región tienen sus propias costumbres. En este caso un país, el cual vendrá con sus nuevas costumbres, manera de expresarse (tanto coloquial como formal), etc; y al nosotros vernos inmiscuidos en esa cultura, debemos aprender de ella y a expresarnos en su respectivo idioma. De esta manera, los habitantes de dicho país, sentirán que no están lidiando con un extraño al momento de tratar de explicar sus costumbres y podrán hacerlos parte de su sociedad.

Considero que su consejo es muy bueno, puesto que es real, las personas debemos enfocarnos no sólo a aprender un idioma gramáticamente, sino que hay que involucrarnos en el entorno que mueve a esta lengua, a veces tenemos la simple idea de que las cosas son iguales en todos los países, cuando no lo es, pero si bien es cierto hoy en día contamos con una herramienta súper poderosa que nos puede trasladar inclusive sin viajar o estar en ese lugar y conocer un poco más de una cultura diferente a la nuestra, este elemento de gran ayuda es el internet, allí tenemos no una sino varias fuentes de información dispuestas a darnos cada detalle de lo que hace especial y el por qué es importante profundizar en el contexto de dicho idioma, además de que nos va a permitir desarrollar capacidades de discernimiento y análisis de cómo son las situaciones y el modo de pensar en otro espacio geográfico, esto nos hará mejores investigadores y clasificadores de conocimientos, haciendo que nuestro aprendizaje se amplíe y atribuyéndole una visión distinta al momento de llevar a la práctica estos saberes. Sin duda, estas pequeñas cosas nos ayudan a incrementar nuestro interés por el idioma y a mejorar nuestra técnica al hablarlo.

Es un consejo muy útil Mr. Bermúdes ya que para aprender algo ya sea un idioma, una costumbre, etc debemos empezar por saber su origen, de donde proviene. Esto nos va a ayudar a conocer a profundidad lo que queremos aprender y que más si es un idioma. Isabel Vera (EPA-S-MA-8-1), aprender un nuevo idioma no solo es hablarlo y entenderlo, también es investigar y conocer la cultura del mismo, de donde vino, sus variaciones, claro que no se compara con el idioma español que es muy extenso en palabras, como también no es lo mismo vivir en Norteamérica que en Sudamérica, por eso debemos ir mas allá de los que nos muestra y tendremos buenas oportunidades en la vida profesional.

What are LAS TRES MARÍAS called in English?

(Left to right:  Alnitak ,  Alnilam  and  Mintaka )  The TRES MARIAS is this group of three bright stars that are apparently at the same distance from one another though in reality none is at the same distance. They are called like that in most of Latin America and apparently they are called the THREE KINGS (the Magi) in the Philippine Islands. The TRES MARIAS after whom those stars are named are Mary, mother of Jesus; Mary Magdalene and Mary, the wife of Clopas (probably a relative of Jesus's). To find them in the sky means you are also looking at the constellation of Orion (the Warrior), to be more precise, its belt because that is precisely what the TRES MARIAS are called in English: Orion's Belt.

The Maps of Ship-Trap Island

Once I had my high school students read The Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell. Rainsford, the main character, is a professional hunter traveling by ship to his next hunting area, accidentally ends up in an island called Ship- Trap island. When he goes into the island he finds there are two men living in a palace in the island. One of them is a Cossack general and the other, his brutish servant.  The Cossack is called general Zaroff who is also  a game hunter but has become bored of hunting regular game and now uses the island's unique position to capture sailors from shipwrecks. He lets them go first and next after some time he hunts them down. Rainford's arrival who is worldwide famous presents Zaroff with a rare opportunity to find excitement in hunting again by hunting another hunter. Little does Zaroff know that Rainsford is The Most Dangerous Game in the World and hunting him will not be easy at all. My students enjoyed themselves at reading

How do you say NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO in English?

"Oh no! Not another power blackout!"             NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO or PESEBRE NAVIDEÑO is a tradition which consists in recreating the moment of Jesus Christ's birth with small figures representing Joseph, Mary, the shepherds and the Wise Kings. Baby Jesus is set on December 25th of course, while the other figures are placed before, usually at the beginning of December.       The translation is NATIVITY SCENE, though some people only say CHRISTMAS SCENE. This last term is a bit broad -- even an image of Santa Claus riding his sleigh falls under that description. Saying CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENE would be perhaps more appropriate.                                                                                        Merry Christmas!
