Ultimate Spiderman: the new Disney-influenced TV series

Image
This is one of the most recent TV series, with Spiderman as a protagonist, after Marvel was bought by Disney.   Though he is still the same wise-cracking hero and his background story has been respected this Spiderman indeed has a lot of the Marvel spirit but now also Disney's. Peter Parker is still Peter Parker, Jonah Jameson is still Jonah Jameson, Mary Jane Watson is still Mary Jane Watson but certain aspects have been emphasized on purpose. Peter is and looks much more a teen than he did in previous series and so are some of the other characters such as Mary Jane. His aunt is now a modern woman that spends most of the time outside home which is convenient for Peter and his secret identity. Also it is Peter who narrates the story in every episode and the audience now can get to see  humorous renditions of the comment Peter or any of the other characters makes (such as when Peter claims that Spiderman is a singer in his class and we get to see that image on the screen).

Spartacus: Blood and More Blood

Image
Spartacus is a series produced by the cable network Starz that tells what happened when a Thracian warrior is made slave by the Romans when Rome was only a republic. His wife, Sura, is separated from him and taken somewhere while he is sold to a gladiator house. The owner of the house renames the Thracian and calls him Spartacus.  Baliatus, now the owner of Spartacus, cannot control him so he makes a deal with Spartacus offering to seek Sura and bring her in in exchange of Spartacus's services. With that offer in his mind he works and becomes an idol of the arena. Later on Spartacus discovers that Batiatus knew all along  where Sura was and in fact he managed to have her captive knowing that his deal with Spartacus would be over  the moment he reunites with Sura. In order to keep Spartacus, Batiatus had arranged Sura to be delivered to him but in state of near death. After that Baliatus had apologized to Spartacus for "not being able to rescue Sura earlier". Terra Nova

Image
This is one of the few sci-fi TV series produced in recent years that deserved a better fate (it was cancelled after the season 1 finale).  In the year 2149 mankind has abused of Earth so much that the quality of the planet resources , and therefore life itself, is declining rapidly. As a window of hope a rift in time is discovered and groups of people are sent 85 million years into the past to the time of the Cretaceous period. These "chosen" ones are people carefully selected because of their abilities so for example Elizabeth Shannon is chosen for being an outstanding doctor. She is sent with two of her three children while her husband, Jim who is a former police, remains in prison and her little daughter whose conception was considered a crime in a time when only two children are allowed per couple is left alone. But the Shannons have a plan and  Jim manages to escape and bring their little daughter with him the day they are sent to the Cretaceous, a non-return trip

Batman: Chill of The Night

Image
Batman, The Brave and The Bold, was a TV series where Batman usually teamed up with another superhero for an adventure. Each episode actually included two different adventures. The art, quite cartoonish,  marked the tone of the show which seemed to aim at an audience younger than the previous series. Batman was still dark but not much and was also gritty abut only a little bit.The emphasis was more on his crime fighting skills than his detective skills or on his penchant to work in the shadows of the very shadowy Gotham. Most of the time it was lighthearted and entertaining.  Most of the time. There is one episode that stands for being different from the rest and that is Chill of The Night. Batman is on his way to confront the man who shot his parents and also to discover something that is a new element in the Batman mythos: that his parents´deaths were not a random event. Unaware of what is happening in a realm beyond ours, Batman's actions are observed with interest by two

Super Friends: A Simple Truth

Image
When I was a little kid both my parents worked the whole day which meant that my sister and I were looked after a babysitter, but really she did not do such a good job. Since we used to live in an apartment, getting out was no easy task, so most of the time we spent the afternoon just watching TV. Was it a fruitless activity? Perhaps, but when I weigh my past life and remember all the time I was in front of a TV I realize there were things that I learned that I could not have acquired from any other source.  One of those sources was none other that this cartoon show: The Super Friends that united the greatest comic book heroes to face their enemies on a regular basis. Usually the good guys had the upper hand, but then in one episode called The Monolith of Evil the Legion of Doom (that's the bad guys' group) stumbles upon a most  unexpected discovery, an object so powerful it could grant any wish. The Justice League (the Super Friends) can do nothing against the onslaught

Mazinger Z: King of Robots

Image
That's what he is, a king, though he has also been described as an angel or as a demon. His name after all is a combination of both words. The story behind Mazinger and how it came to exist has to be one of the most well-known`pieces of data of our pop culture. But what is truly interesting is how the series keeps faithful to its Anime roots and brought stories that at times could not be considered stories for kids. I remember that the first time one cartoon character died to never, ever, come back was in  Mazinger Z. The robot was usually repaired by a group of three scientists. One day trying to warn Koji Kabuto, the pilot of Mazinger, of an impeding danger one of those three scientists (Dr. Mori Mori I think he was named) got killed.     Beyond the titanic fights against other giant robots, beyond the veritable battle between good and evil, there are the stories that made Mazinger stand out from other series; stories that made Mazinger and Kabuto multidimensional and int

Lucille Ball : Best female comedian ever

Image
Who else but Lucille Ball? This actress was one of those few people that brought so much happiness to so many people by doing what she loved the most: acting. And no one can compare to her since for some reason pretty women do not step into comedy the same way she did. Lucy was a queen of physical comedy (her sequence with Harpo is amazing!) and she could make gestures with her face that surely make Jim Carrey pale with envy every time he sees them. Yes, it was her time during the "I Love Lucy" series that was her best and not much of the productions she starred before or after that is remembered by fans, but still that alone is more than enough to guarantee her place among all the other Hollywood stars past and present. And this is my favorite sequence: Lucy always wanted to appear on TV but her husband, who was in the showbiz, always avoided giving her any chance because she had no talent at all. One day she gets wind that her husband needs a girl for a commercial in the

Dr. Who?

Image
]Who is he? Well, he is Who. All the eleven guys in the picture are actually the same guy. It happens that the character they interpret is called The Doctor, an alien that is also a Time Lord of sorts who can "regenerate"when in state of near death. So every time the lead actor is going to become unavailable for some reason the writers of the series called "Dr. Who" simply create a story where the good doctor ends up in great need "to regenerate" and thus a new actor steps in and a new incarnation of The Doctor is with us (the current incarnation is the eleventh).  Doctor Who is a sci-fi character created by the very British BBC (which explains the Doctor's preference for Britain when visiting Earth) in 1963 and has been out in series, specials and numerous revivals. As I mentioned the Doctor is a Time Lord who in order to travel through time and space uses The Tardis, a spaceship that in the outside looks like a blue Police box but it's much

Smallville: Whatever Happened to it?

Image
Well, the question should be: "What is happening in Smallville?" It happens that the story of Clark Kent does not stop when he dons the supersuit, and perhaps we don't get to see that on TV but DC comics (the company that owns the rights to publish Superman) is offering the answer to that question with an eleventh season that presents Clark's adventures when he is already Superman and no longer The Blur. Each chapter is offered in the format of a digital comic book which you can access once you pay 99 cents so a credit card is needed. Many things (logical things) did not happen in the series for commercial reasons such as Clark Kent meeting a young Bruce Wayne  before he became Batman or a recently arrived princess Diana of Themiscyra before she adopted her Wonder Woman persona. There were also loose ends such as what ever happened to Lana Lang or Supergirl after we last saw them. What about the Martian Manhunter or Zatanna? Where did Doomsday end up really? And th

Spiderman, leader of other heroes

Image
Let's start by saying that Spiderman is not my favorite superhero. Superman is. But there is something about the Webslinger that appeals to everyone, perhaps his hard luck, his wisecracks while fighting villains, his undefeated belief that justice will prevail in the end. Also Spiderman is Peter Parker, a college student who helps his aunt because his parents are long gone (their whereabouts unknown since Peter was an infant) and his uncle is dead because Peter made a mistake. It is precisely to make up for that mistake that Peter uses his powers (obtained when a spider bit him) to ensure that evil never gets the upper hand. Spiderman is so popular that several comic books featuring him are published regulaly, and several movies have been produced (with one being released in July this year). There have been also a number of TV shows  with the 1994 series being the longest and perhaps the be

J.R. Ewing is coming back

Image
You may remember him as Major Tony Nelson in I Dream of Jeannie, where he is a good guy in love with a blond genie; but he is better known for a much darker role he played in a famous series of the eighties, Dallas. Larry Hgaman was J.R. Ewing, the oldest son of a wealthy family in the oil and cattle-ranching business. As such J.R. saw every member of his family as a pawn in a chess game where pretty much everyone else was his opponent. J.R. was the perfect portrayal of the manipulating, merciless, scheming multimillionaire who was hungry for more. There was only one word to define him: evil. Still this character had such a mysterious charm that perhaps the phrase "the villain everyone loves to hate" was created for him. This is so true that Hagman appeared in the entire run of the series (357 episodes), also appearing in two subsequent movies made in 1996 and 1998 respectively. His character is not a cliche because every other character of similar characterisitcs became an

X-men: The Animé series

Image
What a great rendition of the X-men this is! Anime X-men is by far the best X-men show to date and also the best of the anime shows produced by Marvel this year (the other, Blade, Iron man and Wolverine are not so bad). One thing I like is that the show seems to fit into continuity (or pretends to do so) right after the events of the Phoenix manifestation. The team comprises of the Beast, Storm, Cyclops, Wolverine, Emma Frost and Armor (Hisaki Ichiki) a Japanese mutant girl. Their opponents this time are the U-men, human supremacists now located in Japan who are hunting mutants to collect their organs. What happens in the end? Well, the U-men have extra help. Someone else is pulling the strings and is one of the major villains, only not Magneto or Apocalypse. If you're an X-men fan this is one production you cannot miss.

Un big bang de comedia

Image

One of the Greatest HBO series: Rome

Image
This is one series that deserved much better, and it is not because of a low audience or anything like that. There have been two seasons and no more just because the powers-that- be considered producing this series was just too costly. Rome tells you the story of two Roman soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Tito Pullo, and how they interact with prominent real historical figures as a Julius Caesar in his ascension to become the only governor of the Roman Republic or a still teenage but ambitious Octavius. The writers of the series do a magnificent job telling us the stories of these two men with distinct personalities but friends and heroes to the end. Also we get to see the intrigue, the ambitions of the powerful Roman families of that time, how they used people as pawns in their games of ambition and hatred and let their passions be the true dictators of the mighty Rome.you get to care forn these characters because though their masters become even more corrupt they stay true to their be

Nuevos Young Justice

Image

Ashton replacing Charlie

Image
Is Ashton Kutcher the ideal replacement of Charlie Sheen?                 After watching the first episode of the new season of Two and a Half Men my impression is that none other than the producers themselves understood that the answer is no. What they did was to create an entirely new character, somebody who were able to create his own niche rather than occupy the one Sheen left vacant, and they will try to move forward from that premise. Ashton is a not a bad actor and he did pretty well but truly I can´t see this series repeating the success it had without Sheen´s character to make his brother´s life miserable in his own particular style. I might be wrong though and I hope I  am. There are nevertheless things that make me suspicious about the whole mess and one of them is that recently Charlie Sheen seemed to have reached a friendly agreement to settle the legal problem he had with the producers of Two and a Half Men. We all need to take a sabb

Old vs new Thundercats, which one is better?

Image
Hard to say. It's really two different stories. The "first" Thundercats were visitors from another planet called Thundera actually seeking haven in a planet they called Third planet that was, for all the evidence provided, an alternate version of our Earth (Excalibur for example exists there) sometime in a distant future where mankind doesn´t exist or has departed to other worlds. Thundera has been destroyed by some malign intervention later revealed to be the action of a powerful and evil sword that had been kept inside the planet. A neighboring planet called Plundarr is home to a race that hates all Thunderians for no apparent reason whatsoever and they are called the Mutants that are actually alien antropomorphs that for some reason none of them resembles cats (you see, the Thundercats were created by a cat person). The only survivors from the destruction of this tragedy is a group of catlike humanoid warriors called the Thundercats who are led by their brave leader, L
