Spiderman, leader of other heroes
Let's start by saying that Spiderman is not my favorite superhero. Superman is. But there is something about the Webslinger that appeals to everyone, perhaps his hard luck, his wisecracks while fighting villains, his undefeated belief that justice will prevail in the end. Also Spiderman is Peter Parker, a college student who helps his aunt because his parents are long gone (their whereabouts unknown since Peter was an infant) and his uncle is dead because Peter made a mistake. It is precisely to make up for that mistake that Peter uses his powers (obtained when a spider bit him) to ensure that evil never gets the upper hand.
Spiderman is so popular that several comic books featuring him are published regulaly, and several movies have been produced (with one being released in July this year). There have been also a number of TV shows with the 1994 series being the longest and perhaps the best mainly for the quality of the stories offered here heavily based on what is offered in the comic books. Now, one other thing about Spiderman: he is not a team player and definitely not a leader and if he ever occupies this role is usually reluctantly. Right before the series was cancelled the creators prepared a group of interconnected chapters of a saga called Secret Wars. In chapter 61 an omnipotent being, for reasons of his own, forces Spiderman to lead a group of heroes to fight against a group of villains from Earth that has taken over a paradise planet that knew no evil before the intervention of this all-powerful being (called The Beyonder) who was also responsible of transporting the group of villains to the aforementioned planet.
The villains chosen by the Beyonder are some of Spiderman's enemies and also two characters that are beyond his league such as Doctor Doom and the Red Skull. Spiderman accepts the task and is transported to a base in the planet he has to save where there is a machine imbued by the Beyonder with power enough to bring a fixed number of heroes, anyone he chooses. Spiderman is then left alone and makes his choices. He brings a family of heroes, two Avengers and one X-man. The ones he picks, the reasons why he picks them and the music are the most momentous parts of this series and the best I have seen in any superhero-based material. Worth seeing if you're a real comic fan: http://youtu.be/iZ0L_XS_otA
