Ultimate Spiderman: the new Disney-influenced TV series
This is one of the most recent TV series, with Spiderman as a protagonist, after Marvel was bought by Disney.
Though he is still the same wise-cracking hero and his background story has been respected this Spiderman indeed has a lot of the Marvel spirit but now also Disney's.
Peter Parker is still Peter Parker, Jonah Jameson is still Jonah Jameson, Mary Jane Watson is still Mary Jane Watson but certain aspects have been emphasized on purpose. Peter is and looks much more a teen than he did in previous series and so are some of the other characters such as Mary Jane. His aunt is now a modern woman that spends most of the time outside home which is convenient for Peter and his secret identity. Also it is Peter who narrates the story in every episode and the audience now can get to see humorous renditions of the comment Peter or any of the other characters makes (such as when Peter claims that Spiderman is a singer in his class and we get to see that image on the screen).
This Spiderman draws heavily on the line of the "Ultimate" comics from Marvel which offers a more update version of their characters. There is also a lo of more interaction between Spiderman and the other characters so for example Nick Fury appears in the first episode making the plot even more interesting. The drawing style is more cartoonist now, and is also more Manga-influenced. The pacing is quick, sometimes too much, as if the creators wanted to reflect thus that the protagonist is indeed a teen.
The whole tone is quite light-hearted, less dark, less violent and much less sad, with no blood or bruises anywhere; very Disney for sure. Is this a change something bad or something good? That is something that you yourself will have to decide. I saw the first episode and I liked it but I'm not sure if I want to see the second. I would if I knew that what happened in the comics will also happen in the TV series and that is that Peter Parker died trying to save his aunt and Gwen Stacy from the Green Goblin which he did at the cost of his own life.
But Disney wouldn´t let that happen, or would they?
If you're a fan of Spiderman, or your children are, you will get to like this new take on Spiderman at least for how long each episode is.
