How do you say DICCIONARIO DE SINONIMOS Y ANTONIMOS in English?

Image
It is so easy and at the same time so unlikely. In English you say all that, DICCIONARIO DE ANTONIMOS Y SINONIMOS, in only one word-THESAURUS. It seems that Thesaurus (or better said Thesauri, that is the plural form) have been around since the times of ancient Greece, and at least the name comes from a Latin term based in turn on a Greek  word that means Treasure (a Treasure of knowledge?)  Unlike regular dictionaries, definitions are not to be found. This is only a reference compilation of antonyms an synonyms, quite useful when learning a new language and that comes in handy whenever we want to avoid redundancy.

The First Capital of the United States

Image
Washington D.C. has not always been the capital of the United States. The fair city of Philadelphia was first. It was in Philadelphia that the Declaration of Independence  in 1776 and the Constitution in 1876 were signed by George Washington, John Adams, Jefferson among others. Philly as it is also called (The City of Brotherly Love, too) was founded in 1682 and it remained as capital of the United States until 1800 when Washington D.C. became officially the capital of the then still young nation and so it has remained until today.

How do you say MARIDO MANDARINA in English?

Image
For this one I'm using the term we use in Guayaquil to refer to the sad case of husbands who are mistreated, beaten, bullied or intimidated by their wives.  MARIDO MANDARINA in English is HEN-PECKED HUSBAND.  It really makes sense since it has been observed that hens and roosters establish their rank by pecking. When a bird strikes something with its beak that is called pecking. If a hen ever feels stronger than one of her male counterparts it will peck at him. The term MARIDO MANDARINA is perhaps incorrect since a MANDARINA  is a fruit (tangerine). It is used because the word COMMAND in Spanish is MANDAR, equal in sound and spelling, but not meaning, to part of the name of such fruit. MARIDO DOMINADO  would be perhaps more appropriate. The word HENPECKED is originally a hyphenated word (HEN-PECKED)  but these days the hyphen is usually omitted.

Cloud Atlas

A movie that is six movies at the same time. A visionary and quite ambitious project that transcends the ages and even the stars in order to be told. All that and much more is what you get while watching this groundbreaking 2012 film. It is six movies because it is told in the form of six different stories told throughout six different moments in history, past, present and future. The stories overlap so the audience can understand how the six stories are related. One action in the past has its consequences in the present which in turn affects the future and none of the stories can not really be understood unless you put them together. The message it seems to me is the past is still happening in our present since its consequences are here with us and the future is now not tomorrow because it is our actions what build the future. This is not a Hollywood production, is in fact a German production and in many ways looks like a personal effort though really many people were involved. T...

The Dead Zone (the novel)

Image
Stephen King is famous as being a "master of horror" and he deserves the title. His contributions to the genre  include novels such as It, Carrie and Misery . His narrative style is nothing out of this world though, and he himself has recognized that more than once and even advises to write just keeping it simple. I would say that his main quality is his creative capacity and his vivid imagination. In special I like The Dead Zone as he presents an intricate plot which sees an ending where everything fits in the right place.  It is about a young man named Johnny Smith who after suffering an accident falls into a profound coma from which he awakes after several years. When he does, everything in his life has moved on such as his girlfriend who is now married to another man and has a child. Inadvertently he has also changed for he has the power of precognition: touching a person is enough for him to see the future of a person. The novel progresses showing us how this man ...

World War Z

Image
Another zombie movie.  Another Brad Pitt movie. I was not really thrilled before this film began. Brad Pitt in action films has in my opinion been disappointing and also there is so much material about zombies out there that frankly I find the concept overrated already. But then again... This film begins with the "attack" of an unknown virus that spreads in an onslaught that cannot be contained. Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) who used to work for the United Nations and is now a retiree and has a wife and two daughters sees how his idyllic life is abruptly interrupted when the virus spreads in his city. Lane and his family have to find shelter in the apartment of other people because they find themselves unable to return to their home. Soon most of the entire population has been zombified. It is not that they die: once someone is infected the victim becomes extremely violent and has this ceaseless and insane desire to attack and bite healthy people thus spreading the infection...

How do you say PUBLICIDAD in English?

Image
PUBLICITY or ADVERTSING both mean the same but there is a connotation about the use of PUBLICITY.  When we get unitended attraction for something we did then we are getting PUBLICITY. When we get public exposure or gain the attention of the media it is for free and if it is positive then it is definitely a good thing to happen. Stars and politicians usually get bed publicity. When we want to sell one of our products then we begin a marketing campaign for this to happen and part of that campaign involves ADVERTISING our product and that requires the use of the media or a form of the media. That of course implies we have to pay for that. For what in Spanish we understand as PUBLICIDAD,  the one that gets closer in meaning is definitely ADVERTISING whereas PUBLICITY is mas bien NOTORIEDAD.
