World War Z

Another zombie movie.
Another Brad Pitt movie.
I was not really thrilled before this film began. Brad Pitt in action films has in my opinion been disappointing and also there is so much material about zombies out there that frankly I find the concept overrated already. But then again...
This film begins with the "attack" of an unknown virus that spreads in an onslaught that cannot be contained. Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) who used to work for the United Nations and is now a retiree and has a wife and two daughters sees how his idyllic life is abruptly interrupted when the virus spreads in his city. Lane and his family have to find shelter in the apartment of other people because they find themselves unable to return to their home. Soon most of the entire population has been zombified. It is not that they die: once someone is infected the victim becomes extremely violent and has this ceaseless and insane desire to attack and bite healthy people thus spreading the infection. The Lanes survive the night and are rescued by soldiers sent by the U.N. who require Gerry's services again. Gerry and his family are taken into a ship in the middle of the sea where the survivors are gathering. In order to find a cure it is necessary to find  how it originated. In order to keep his family safe and sound Gerry Lane accepts this mission that will take him to South Korea, then Israel and finally somewhere in England where accidentally he will become the key to find a way to deal with the virus since a cure seems impossible. The how he does it and the several encounters he has with the zombified victims make this movie a little gem among the films where zombies are the evil force that, more often than not, wins.
Brad Pitt did a great job starring this film where he becomes a character that is not invincible but courageous, determined and with a great power of observation, a quality that will help the survivors deal with the zombies at the end. I liked the story that was pretty well built, intelligent and consistent. The other actors did also a great job but the problem with these films is that the real people do not have as much screen time as the computer-created images that are the hordes of zombies attacking. Though there are zombies in this movie they are scary not only because of their aspect but also their violence. They will do anything and attempt anything in order to spread the virus because these zombies are more like the monsters of I am Legend. It is as how the story unfolds that you will understand this last point.
Five stars out of five for this one.
