Unknown: What do you Know?

Image
Meet Dr. Martin Harris. After arriving in Berlin with his wife, he alone suffers a car accident. Four days later, he awakes in a hospital; his documents, lost; his memory a blur and no one, not even his own wife, seems to remember him. Is he the victim of some sick joke? The truth is actually even worse than that. "Unknown" is a roller coaster with its ups and downs, never boring though. A must-see, already in DVD, with the usual extras and of course the acting of the always consistent, and overwhelming, Liam Neeson

Tron, again after so many years

Image
If you haven't seen Tron The Legacy well...you should, but see it in 3D. It's a movie made to impress your eyes. It begins in our world with the son of the creator of an alternate reality following the clues that will help him find his father who has been lost for years. It turns out this man's father created a video game that is much more than that: it's another reality that can be accessed by others, not only his creator, and inadvertently the young man enters that reality called The Grid and his adventure to locate his father within The Grid begins.  There are other aspects equally remarkable, details  as in the scene where the main character steps in his lost father's office and just then you get to listen to the immortal "Sweet Dreams" (the Eurythmics version). The acting is all right and the story is consistent and well-paced though nothing astounding. The good thing is you don't need to have seen Tron, the first installment, to understand wh

X- Men: First Class

Image
Before the X-men ever existed there were only mutants. What drove Xavier to believe in a world where humans and mutants could coexist harmoniously? What made his best friend oppose that dream and thus become Xavier’s greatest enemy?  If you want to watch a good superhero movie then this is a good pick. It can be found in the DVD format already with extras that include scenes that were never seen in the movie, and there is one in particular that deserves attention: when Xavier and Magneto are looking for mutants to recruit and they go to a nightclub. You´ll be able to see Michael Fassbender, the actor that appears as a young Magneto, dressing as a drag queen!  Chronologically speaking this is also a good point to understand the X-Men  since it is supposed to be the first of the series. Then you could continue with Wolverine: Origins and then X- Men I, II and III. This film also answers the question of how the X-men came to be, why Magneto came to the conviction mutants are a supe

Julia or Charlize, who is better at being the Evil Queen?

Image
Well, the problem with this story is that there is not much to it. It's only a fairy tale with few things happening so whenever a film based on Snow White is produced a lot of creativity has to be put in order to fill the standard one hour and forty five minutes most movies last. This also means that every interpretation will imply a lot of liberties in order to deliver a story that Holliwood producers may  find potentially profitable.  The version with Julia Roberts is a family movie. There is humor, no unnecessary epic battles, no real violence; there is a Snow White that actually looks innocent, and no loose ends. The story moves at a good pace and the acting of most of the cast is acceptable with Julia Roberts being the natural star. Without her it would be just another movie. It's just a matter of seing her acting. She is the one that makes that movie interesting and her actions keep the film going. In fact at the beginning the witch queen announces the movie is ab

Men in Black III: friends through time

Image
The Men in Black are back and this time agent J (Will Smith) will save the world as we know it by saving agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) and for that he will have to travel to the sixties in order to prevent that an alien time-traveler murder K's younger self (Josh Brolin). Sounds mindboggling? Well, it is. When an alien who was imprisoned by K in the past escapes from prison, he then begins a scheme that will result in K's death and an alien invasion in our present. Using his influences J manages to get a device that will take him to the day before K is murdered. There are a lot of things happening in th+´p This new sequel allows Smith to prove he was born to be agent J, Tommy Lee Jones looks truly old but does not disappoin and Brolin surprises in his role as a younger K. The movie also has all the stylistic elements that made the previous two a great success each, especially the weird-looking aliens contrasting with the serious though sleek human agents. The plot is consistent

Which one looks better as the Evil Queen?

Image
Hard to say, really. If only for what we can see in the picture added to this entry, my money is on Charlize. She looks cold, cruel and yet regal, while Julia cannot shake off that "good girl" image. Without the proper context I would even say she is some fairy godmother though there is none mentioned in the story of Snow White. Of course they are both consumate interpreters (they  both are Oscar winners) and to be fair, we should watch first both versions of the fairy tale where this queen witch rears her pretty-then-ugly face. And in this case, two of them. BTW, it´s not the first time that Snow White is taken to the silver screen in non-animated form: Sigourney Weaver (the famous Ripley in the first three Alien movies was also the evil queen in Snow White: A Tale of Terror. Is it having two different interpretations of the same tale put out the same year a good idea? It´s not unusual that two film companies decide to release movies that deal with the same theme if onl

Thor can't fly

Image
It's true. He's a god and everything  but flight is not in his list of abilities. Superman can fly, Iron man can fly, Green Lantern can fly,but not Thor; nevertheless, we see him flying in his own title and in the movies. How does he do it? The answer is really simple. It´s all about that whirlwind-like movement he performs before he goes up in the air. He moves Mjolnir (the name of his enchanted hammer) that way and then he thrusts it forward and as a result Thor is pulled by his hammer and looks like he's flying. Of course, it also falls on Thor's skillfulness to keep the momentum for as long as he can, plus it also helps that Mjolnir is essentially a magic tool created to help his owner in this and many other endeavours. This really ingenous method is only exhibited by Thor's Marvel's version. The Norse version, moves around in a chariot pulled not by horses but by two goats called  Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr   . As you can see, Marvel was right to keep t

The Paranormal franchise

Image
The third installment of Paranormal Activity is out and it´s not a sequel but a prequel. Usually second parts, or third parts, tend to lack the brilliance and even some of the energy the first part had (if we are talking of a successful film that is), however that doesn´t seem to be the case here since the film has been receiving positive reports so perhaps watching this story might not be a waste of time even if PA3 has only half of the punch PA1 had. The key in understanding why PA3 and also PA2 do not disappoint is that neither is truly a sequel. PA2 says how and why Katie and Micah (the couple in PA1) get tormented by a strange entity with mostly events happening before PA1 and only some of them happening after that. PA3 tells you how Katie and Kristie, both sisters originally met the entity that would come back to haunt them in adulthood. It turns out that they have been in contact with this pseudo demon ever since they were little girls and according to clues given in PA2  the pr

The next Superman

Image
I don´t really know if Henry Cavill is the ideal actor to play Big Blue. First of all, he doesn't completely  look like Superman. Supes has to be and look strong but he also has certain aspects of his physiognomy that make him distinct such as the S curl on his forehead, his blue eyes, or the shape of his face less angular than Cavill´s. I don´t question Mr. Cavill´s thespian abilities but then I didn´t question George Clooney´s either and see what happened when he was Batman in Batman Forever. Perhaps,  I´m wrong and for the good of the Superman franchise I hope I am. Update (May 28th /2013): By now we know of more changes such as black Perry White (Lawrence Fishburne) and Michael Shannon as General Zod who is the villain of the story. Russell Crowe is Jor-El and Kevin Costner is Jonathan Kent and none other than Amy Adams will be Lois Lane. Apparently the movie will have a more serious tone such as that in the Batman's movies. Hans Zimmer will be in charge of the music s

Fright Night: Otra película de Vampiros

Image

The Human Centipede: A good horror movie?

Image
There are movies I would recommend and there are those I never would. I just don’t see the point in bringing more suffering and misery into this world. I have nothing against horror movies as long as they remain in the realm of the impossibility; nevertheless, there are ways to torture human beings that we know are possible and because of that shouldn’t be used as the plot of any film. The Human Centipede is an example. In this story a mad German doctor captures three people (a Japanese tourist and two US girls) and joins them surgically to form a longer digestive system. The reason why? Just to prove he can. I’ll spare you the details of the operation and result, but if you see the movie anyway, you will find that beyond its disgusting premise there’s nothing new in terms of plot or even acting and perhaps only some similarities with The Fly, Saw and Hostel .
