Argo
A movie produced and directed by Ben Affleck, Argo tells you the real story of what happened to the staff of the U.S. embassy in Teheran, Iran, in 1979 that was overriden by Islam fundamentalists who took hostage all of the staff of the embassy with the exception of six of them who escaped unnoticed and went into the Canadian embassy where they remained hidden. Soon a plan is devised and the person in charge of the rescue is Tony Mendez, CIA operative, who comes with the most unlikely idea: to make the escapées pretend they are part of a filming crew of a movie called Argo who have come to Teheran looking for a good filming location for their phony Sci.fi film.
Amazing as it is, no part of this is fictional. All of it really happened and if the plan Mendez came up with worked or not, well, that is part of History already and if you are curious about it you should see this movie that has been praised by the critics and the public alike and thaqt alone should tell you something. Up to the moment I am writing this, Argo has been nominated for several Oscar awards and has already been awarded several of the other prizes granted by the other artist associations existing in Hollywood.
What can I say about acting, plot and effects? Everything has been done well and eventhough it is non-fiction the amount of tension seems more of a fictional film than not.
Five stars out of five for this one.
Update Feb, 26 -2013: Now that the dust is settled we know that Argo won the Oscar to the best movie 2012. My candidate was Lincoln but apparently Hollywood has an increased interest on the conflicts in the Middle East wherever America is involved (the Oscar to the 2008 film, The Hurt Locker is proof of that). Still Argo is a much more interesting film and is definitely not an unworthy winner.
