Django Unchained
Let's be clear about this. Django Unchained is not a good movie. It is a good Quentin Tarantino movie which is perhaps a better thing to say.
Tarantino here tells the story of a German bounty hunter called Dr. Schultz (Christopher Waltz) who in his quest to nab three criminals he does not know, seeks the help of a slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) who knows those criminals because they tortured him and his wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington). Django does help Dr. Schultz who asks Django to stay with him and help him in other bounty cases. In exchange the doctor will help Django find his wife so the former slave accepts and for an entire season (winter) the doctor is helped by Django who receives training in shooting and bounty hunting. When the term of their deal expires Dr. Schults and Django look for Broomhilda in Mississipi and find she is now a slave in Candyland, a farm that belongs to Calvin J Candie (Leonardo Di Caprio) who is assisted by his loyal black butler, Stephen (Samuel l. Jackson). Dr. Schultz pretends he is interested in buying other more valuable slaves from Candie so when he makes his offer then he will ask also for Broomhilda a t a reasonable price and when they get her leave without paying for the "other slave". It would turn out as planned if not for Stephen's intervention who reveals to Candie what Shultz really wan. Candie reacts voilently and forces too buy Broomhilda a 12,000 dollars the price that Shultz was offering for the "more valuable" slave which would have been used for some pseudo sport called Mandingo fighting. Broomhilda is a free woman now and on leaving Candie insists that Schultz shakes hands with him. Since the doctor is disgusted by the kind of man Candie is, he refuses but when he is forced he shoots and kills Candie. Chaos ensues, Shultz is killed and Dajngo kills as many of Candie´s henchmen as he can but has to stop when Stephen threatens Broomhilds´s life. And once again Django is made a slave.
The ending (not included here) is as bloodthirsty as the rest of the movie which is packed with carefully orchestrated action and a plot that is not linear, at least not completely. As I said before, this is a great Quentin Tarantino movie which by itself should be another category within action movies due to charateristics that Tarantino imprints in his films, very personal sometimes. Of course, Tarantino only makes good action films but still it surprises me Django Unchained was among the nominées to be awarded as 2012 best film by the Academy and I was not surprised it did not win. Tarantino does not disppoint here anyway and for those who like action-packed films combined with some humor, especially selected music, decent acting and a consistent plot, then you can go see Django (plus Franco Nero, the famous Italian actor who was the first Django in the time of spaghetti westerns makes a cameo appearance along other stars who are Tarantino´s friends).
Four stars out of five for this one.
