Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monsters

Very entertaining movie.
The adventures of Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) continue now that he is fully integrated into the life of a demigod and struggles with the permanent challenges he faces when being in Half-Blood Camp. Besides  his friends, Grover Underwood (Brandon T. Jackson), a satyr, and Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario), Athena's daughter, Percy is surprised to find out that he has a brother named Tyson (Douglas Smith), a cyclops. He also has a rival, Clarisse La Rue (Leven Rambin) who is Ares's daughter.
The movie begins with a flashback revealing how Annabeth and other kids arrived at Half- Blood Camp chased by a group of cyclops. One of them, Thalia Grace (Paloma Kwiatkowski) sacrifices so the others can reach the gates of the Camp. Since Thalia is the daughter of Zeus who transforms his daughter into a tree before she dies and with that he also grans a gift so no other demigod child dies like Thalia. The new tree extends an invisible barrier so powerful that the camp is never threatened again, that is as long as Thalia stands. 
In present time, the camp suffers an attack for the first time in decades. When that is averted, it is discovered that someone has been poisoning Thalia whose defense is weakening as it is her life. Annabeth discovers that the only thing that can save Thalia is the Golden Fleece an object with the power to cure anything. A team is dispatched to retrieve the Fleece from its current location in the Sea of Monsters (the Bermuda Triangle), only this team is led by Clarisse but does not include Percy and the others. 
On his own, Percy has discovered who is behind the attack and it is Luke Castellan (Jake Abel), the Lightning Thief, who survived after seemingly dying in the Percy Jackson: The lightning Thief. He is helped
by other demigods and mythical creatures and he has a secret agenda. Percy also discovers that there is a prophesy saying that one son of the three prime gods would fight Luke and will have the chance to save or destroy Olympus. Since he is the only one alive,  Percy thinks the one in  the prophecy is him so he sets a squad of his own to get the Fleece. And of course it will not be easy. Percy will find that Luke's purpose is more terrifying that he thinks and in the process will make new friends and learn to love his new found brother. Plus the ending leaves us with the possibility of a sequel when yet another character is added.
I loved this movie, much better than the last one. I would say it is all about the screenplay who in this case was Marc Guggenheim, quite a seasoned writer. The special effects are, as required, stunning and so are the makeup, costumes and settings. The action is well handled and helps keep the face. The actors most of them quite young have grown into their roles quite well though I still find Annabeth to similar to Hermione.
I did not like Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief , but this new installment left me willing to see the next one, and it is a nice way to introduce Greek mythology to the kids.
Four stars out of five for this one.

The Maps of Ship-Trap Island

Once I had my high school students read The Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell. Rainsford, the main character, is a professional hunter traveling by ship to his next hunting area, accidentally ends up in an island called Ship- Trap island. When he goes into the island he finds there are two men living in a palace in the island. One of them is a Cossack general and the other, his brutish servant.  The Cossack is called general Zaroff who is also  a game hunter but has become bored of hunting regular game and now uses the island's unique position to capture sailors from shipwrecks. He lets them go first and next after some time he hunts them down. Rainford's arrival who is worldwide famous presents Zaroff with a rare opportunity to find excitement in hunting again by hunting another hunter. Little does Zaroff know that Rainsford is The Most Dangerous Game in the World and hunting him will not be easy at all. My students enjoyed themselves at reading

How do you say NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO in English?

"Oh no! Not another power blackout!"             NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO or PESEBRE NAVIDEÑO is a tradition which consists in recreating the moment of Jesus Christ's birth with small figures representing Joseph, Mary, the shepherds and the Wise Kings. Baby Jesus is set on December 25th of course, while the other figures are placed before, usually at the beginning of December.       The translation is NATIVITY SCENE, though some people only say CHRISTMAS SCENE. This last term is a bit broad -- even an image of Santa Claus riding his sleigh falls under that description. Saying CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENE would be perhaps more appropriate.                                                                                        Merry Christmas!
