Kick Ass 2

The sequel to Kick Ass (2010) is a bit inferior when compared to its predecessor. The ironic humor blended with the silly violence all happening in "the real world" is all there but definitely there is this feeling that they have lost some steam, though still it is an enjoyable production if you are one who enjoys this type of violent films which are yet another sign of our times.
Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who years ago put on a costume he himself designed to be the hero called Kick Ass  has now retired from fighting crime but his actions have inspired other people to become heroes themselves. Feeling directionless and bored, he begins training with Mindy Macready (Chloë Grace Moretz) who is still Hit-Girl to become the hero he wants to be. In the meantime, Chris D'Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) the boy whose gangster father was killed by Kick Ass, and was first the hero then criminal Red Mist lives a forced, quiet and dull life in a mansion with his mother who he accidentally kills. That allows him to take control over his family's money, becomes again a supervillain this time with the moniker "the Motherfucker" and begins his vengeance on Kick-Ass, a vengeance that both Kick Ass and the Motherfucker will pay dearly because after all "this is real life."
There are plenty of new characters in the sequel including Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey) and Javier (John Leguizamo) but those roles are really low points compared to these actors' previous and more interesting jobs of the time when their careers were on the rise. Though it still looks like a far-fetched idea (it's based on a story by British comic book writer, Mark Millar), Kick Ass 2 is strong on character development and is not weak in its plot either. The visual aspects are quite decent and the general take of a story of regular people becoming superheroes in the real world still seems to remain true. It´s not a family film because it does glorify violence though it also delivers a powerful message: that your actions always bring consequences, sometimes too high to pay and accept that easily.
It happens in "the real world" after all.
Three stars out of five.
