Dredd

Dredd (2012) is not your typical superhero movie just because  Judge Dredd is not really your typical hero since he is judge, jury and executioner, all in one. Judge Dredd exists in one of those post-apocaliptic futures that were so commonly envisioned by the end of the Cold War. Earth is now a gigantic wasteland and cvilization has retreated to extensive cities simply called Mega-cities. There are apparently three in the U.S. and Judge Dredd lives in the most impotant called Mega City-1 which is like any of our large cities today but with ten times more problems.
Staunch and relentless, Dredd brings justice effectively but sometimes coldly. Crime never rests in Mega City , however, that is not a problem for Dredd  who deep inside enjoys being a Judge.
This future cop has a loyal legion of followers since his adventures began being published in the British comic 2000 A.D.  Later he would have his first movie starred by Sylvester Stallone that was not very successful in terms of money so there was never a sequel. This film is good for its visual aspect much closer to the comic than the latest film that takes some liberties in that aspect,  and besides Stallone does look more like Dredd than Karl Urban.
This new movie (a British-South African production) starred by Karl  Urban seems different with a more realistic vision, and wonderful special effects. Judge Dredd is forced to enter a megabuilding where there are entire populations of poor people subjected by force to an underground distribution cartel led by a cruel female leader called Ma-Ma that is spreading the consumption of a new drug called Slow-Mo. Dredd and his most recent companion a rookie called Judge Anderson, who also happens to be a telepath, take upon themselves to stop Ma-Ma who turns out to be much smarter than the average criminal.
Dredd is not a family movie. There is a lot of gratuitious violence and the movie itself seems to be oriented to a mature audience. Dredd's time is different from ours, a pessimistic vision of what is to come but still hopeful and in this case entertaining.
Three stars out of five for this one.
