Madagascar 3: The Final Part

There are things I like about this animated film and things I just don't like. Let's begin with what I don't like .
The film begins with Alex (the lion), Marty (the zebra), Gloria  (the hippo) and Melman (the giraffe) bored of being in Africa (?). Excuse me...these animals were born in Africa and were happy to be there at the end of Madagascar 2. However, now they actually want to return to the Central Park Zoo in New york where they used to live. What is the message? Africa is not fun enough for these animals? They were not meant to be free?
Then, where are the other African animals they befriended in the previous film? Where are Alex's parents? I know Bernie Mac (who lent his voice to Alex's father) passed away after Madagascar 2 was completed but still...The movie begins completely ignoring the fact they exist and without a single thought of saying good bye or thanks, Mom and Dad, Alx is desperate to leave and off he goes.
The four friends decide to meet the Penguins who along the monkeys have flown to Europe, specifically Monte Carlo as it was seen at the end of Madagascar 2. They wantto board the plane to cross the Atlantic and go back to New York, but they are in the heart of Africa! How is it that they can make it to Monte Carlo? Well, that is never explained. They just go there and appear exactly where they want to be.
I know this is a movie intended for kids, but really is kids and their parents who see these productions (and I'm a parent). Do they (the movie producers) think kids are stupid and mindless individuals who don't ever raise a question? 
Now what I like.
The villain, Captain Chantel Dubois, a police officer in charge of the Animal control section for Monte Carlo who is also a rabid collector of animal heads and she is still missing a lion head. When she gets to know there is a group of wild animals loose in Monte Carlo and one of them is a lion she just won´t stop and there is very little the animals can do to stop her this relentless character. The only ones who can deal with her are none other than the penguins.
The new characters, all of them circus animals, that shelter Alex and his friends and accept them as part of the group. There is a Russian tiger, an Italian sea lion and also a female jaguar.
The monkeys and the penguins actually buy the circus with diamonds they got in Africa and so everybody embarks in the adventure of working in a circus. Their first circus presentation is a wonderful display of magical color, music and extremely good animation.
The sense of finality of the film. Alex and the others manage to return to the zoo but feel it is no longer "home". they have found their call in life and that is being part of the circus. In the end that is what they do: they become circus animals.
There. Some may like it and some may not, but when a trilogy like this is completed instead of grading the last one it is better to do that to the entire group and the Madagascar trilogy, along its specials and spin series has been a great source of entertainment for many people around the world (my little son especially).
So it is five stars out of five for the three Madagascar

The Maps of Ship-Trap Island

Once I had my high school students read The Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell. Rainsford, the main character, is a professional hunter traveling by ship to his next hunting area, accidentally ends up in an island called Ship- Trap island. When he goes into the island he finds there are two men living in a palace in the island. One of them is a Cossack general and the other, his brutish servant.  The Cossack is called general Zaroff who is also  a game hunter but has become bored of hunting regular game and now uses the island's unique position to capture sailors from shipwrecks. He lets them go first and next after some time he hunts them down. Rainford's arrival who is worldwide famous presents Zaroff with a rare opportunity to find excitement in hunting again by hunting another hunter. Little does Zaroff know that Rainsford is The Most Dangerous Game in the World and hunting him will not be easy at all. My students enjoyed themselves at reading

How do you say NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO in English?

"Oh no! Not another power blackout!"             NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO or PESEBRE NAVIDEÑO is a tradition which consists in recreating the moment of Jesus Christ's birth with small figures representing Joseph, Mary, the shepherds and the Wise Kings. Baby Jesus is set on December 25th of course, while the other figures are placed before, usually at the beginning of December.       The translation is NATIVITY SCENE, though some people only say CHRISTMAS SCENE. This last term is a bit broad -- even an image of Santa Claus riding his sleigh falls under that description. Saying CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENE would be perhaps more appropriate.                                                                                        Merry Christmas!
