Jack Reacher: Looks like Mission:Impossible

It looks like Mission: Impossible though it is not. Tom Cruise cannot stop being the same cool guy he is as Ethan Hunt, and of course here he is acting all alone. Think of this movie as a hybrid which takes elements of Mission: Impossible, Sherlock Holmes and Rambo... quite loosely.
It all begins with a sniper shooting five people from a building across a river in plain daylight. The Police arrives and due to the clues they find they figure opur the killer is some guy named Barr who is a sniper but not the sniper who shot those people (so the audience gets to know they have the wrong guy). In order to help, Barr demands Jack Reacher to be found. Jack Reacher is a character who cannot be found unless he wants to and that´s what he does. Befriended and helped by Helen Rodin (the very sexy Rosamund Pike), who just like Reacher suspects Barr is innocent, Jack will dig deeper and deeper just to be found that there is a lot more to the deaths of those five people than it meets the eye.T here are a lot of people involved at all levels and as he uncovers this mystery his life and Helen's will be in danger more often than not.
If you like action movies you won't be disappointed, if you like car chases you will find here one of the best, if you like mysteries then this movie also offers that. Don't expect much from the Reacher character since it is predictable and very linear. I'd say Pike as Helen does a much better job and Robert Duvall's appearance at the end  makes up for all the rest (HE IS a real actor). The story is not bad and the visual aspect is only right. I felt that a better soundtrack would have helped this movie a lot more.
Three stars out of five for this one.

The Maps of Ship-Trap Island

Once I had my high school students read The Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell. Rainsford, the main character, is a professional hunter traveling by ship to his next hunting area, accidentally ends up in an island called Ship- Trap island. When he goes into the island he finds there are two men living in a palace in the island. One of them is a Cossack general and the other, his brutish servant.  The Cossack is called general Zaroff who is also  a game hunter but has become bored of hunting regular game and now uses the island's unique position to capture sailors from shipwrecks. He lets them go first and next after some time he hunts them down. Rainford's arrival who is worldwide famous presents Zaroff with a rare opportunity to find excitement in hunting again by hunting another hunter. Little does Zaroff know that Rainsford is The Most Dangerous Game in the World and hunting him will not be easy at all. My students enjoyed themselves at reading

How do you say NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO in English?

"Oh no! Not another power blackout!"             NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO or PESEBRE NAVIDEÑO is a tradition which consists in recreating the moment of Jesus Christ's birth with small figures representing Joseph, Mary, the shepherds and the Wise Kings. Baby Jesus is set on December 25th of course, while the other figures are placed before, usually at the beginning of December.       The translation is NATIVITY SCENE, though some people only say CHRISTMAS SCENE. This last term is a bit broad -- even an image of Santa Claus riding his sleigh falls under that description. Saying CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENE would be perhaps more appropriate.                                                                                        Merry Christmas!
