TOEFL iBT: A Tip for the Writing Section
First, let's remember that there are two skills in the Writing section: the Integrated task which includes Listening, Reading and Writing components, and the Independent task in which you write only.
The latter is the one we care about at the moment for it is also the only one who allows you to give your opinion.
At the begining, you are given a topic and a series of instructions that can all be reduced to onen single question: "What is your opinion about the topic?"
So, no matter what they say in the instruction, no matter what they say or how they say it, everything comes down to the question written above. You just have to answer they best way you can and that should be enough.
Still, do not come to this exam unprepared. The best way to get ready is envisioning the whole process as going on a trip. Always before traveling you must make provisions: make your luggage, make reservations in a hotel, decide what places to visit in your destination.
Same for this section of the TOEFL. Remember there is a certain number of topics tha can be covered. You can eliminate politics and religion for they are never included. The rest will always be topics that are relatively easy to handle such as "Smoking in Public Places" or "Using Materials other than Plastic as an Ecological Strategy". Since it is your opinion what they want you may as well begin with: "The way I see it..." or "From my perspective...". As you progress keep using expressions like those to begin paragraphs whenever you have to or to add up more ideas such as: "Something else we could do is..." or "On the other hand..." At the end when wrting your conclusion announce that you are finishing by saying: "In the end..." or just "Finally..." and keep in mid that the conclusion is the restatement of what you said in the Introduction
