Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods
Vegeta: "Stand aside, you fools. The remote is all mine today!" |
Well, now after all is said and done I can say this is not necessarily the movie I was waiting for, but still it is one that it's worth anybody's time.
Birus, the god of destruction of this reality, has been awakened by Uis, his apparent servant, who after Birus's awakening informs him that Freeza has been defeated by a Sayan called Son Goku. Birus has been prophesied that after his awakening he would fight a being called Super Sayan God. Wondering if Goku is that being he decides to travel along Uis to challenge Goku to a battle with the fate of the Earth pending on the outcome of this confrontation.
It was good to see all those wonderful characters that we had not seen for quite a while . This is a film that is not only based on violence but also has a lot of the humor the original series had and also that feeling of optimism that permeated the original series, in fact in this film no one dies and aside a couple of logical injuries in each of the contenders there is not even the unnecessary use of blood that other productions resort to so unnecessarily.
Goku is presented as the same restless yet naive warrior that among all his great abilities has an even more incredible power: his noble heart that can make former enemies become his friends. The other characters that are part of this reality all appear too and have not changed either looking as fresh as ever.
As said at the beginning there are a lot of ups:
- I was impressed by Vegeta in particular and how he sacrifices his own pride to save the planet. His biggest moment comes when Bulma is attacked in front of his eyes and then he reacts so angrily that even Birus is taken by surprise.
- I liked how this film adjusts to continuity since Videl's pregnancy is announced plus the fact that Vegeta has a brother as it was revealed in 2008's special Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!
- Also we get to see a new Sayan transformation, the one that should be the ultimate, which is when Goku becomes himself the Sayan Super God (in my opinion one of the few downs because it is not so extraordinary).
- The battle in space which looks amazing.
- The humor and lightheartedness so characteristic of Dragonball, but not Dragonball Z.
- And in the end we learn that the Dragonball universe is much larger than it was said originally and that there are beings who are tougher than Goku and even Birus.
Birus is not an ordinary foe though. As a god it is almost impossible to defeat him and perhaps Goku could do so but he seems not to want to. Perhaps it is because Birus, being the god of destruction and everything is not necessarily evil and in fact enjoys his stay at Earth and his confrontation with Goku so much that he decides not to destroy the planet as he originally intended he would do after defeating the Super Sayan God he came for.
This is a great animé film , full of nostalgia, that is obviously aimed at everyone so families could go and see it with no problem. It is really more a Dragonball film than a Dragonball Z film, but that is my viewpoint more than anything.
Five stars out of five (What did you expect? I´m a big fan!).
