Super

Super is a 2010 film that was written and directed by the same person, James Gunn, which usually means that it is also a low-budget independent film. Nevertheless, it has some interesting names attached to it as Kevin Bacon (as Jacques, the antagonist), Liv Tyler (the protagonist's misguided wife) and Ellen Page (the over energetic sidekick). Rainn Wilson is Frank Darbo, a hard luck man who has had a life of constant rejection but still is in love with justice and believes in what is right.
One day, Darbo's wife, who was a recovering drug addict, decides to leave Frank for Jacques a criminal  lord who keeps her constantly stoned. Unable to convince her to return to him, Frank asks God for a revelation and as a result he decides to become The Crimson Bolt, a vigilante with no powers and no more guns than a wrench.
This film is OK if you're looking for a dark esoteric angle to the superhero theme, though really there is a lot of a spiritual quest involved. It can be irreverent and violent but somehow also entertaining. Don't expect great visual effects or music, though the plot is not so bad, and as stated before the acting is pretty decent since there are several seasoned actors associated to the project.
Three stars out of five.
