English vs Spanish: Fist Names (2)

While most names in English have a somewhat similar version in Spanish the same cannot be said about all names. Robert is Roberto or Ruperto, Charles is Carlos, Elizabeth is Isabel, Fred is Federico and so on. But there is a name in English that can be translated into not one but four different names in Spanish and that is none other than JAMES. Believe it or not, James can be translated into JAIME, JACOBO, DIEGO and SANTIAGO.
Of course, Jacobo is most likely translated into Jacob and Jaime into James but those are not the only possibilities. It happens that originally there was only the Latin name Iacobus, which is the origen of the name Jacob, however, later on Iacobus derived into Iacomus, the most likely predecessor of James. James derived into Jaimein Spanish  as years passed by. James also had an old Spanish/Portuguese form: Yago. One of the earliest Christian saints was named James, that is Saint James which in Spanish would be SAN YAGO. That was obviously the origin of the name Santiago. It is believed that Diego is a short form of Santiago.
So if you ever wondered how to say Santiago or Diego in English, just like Jaime the correct form is James. By the way, Santiago is one of the most popular Christian names and in fact many cities around the world bear this name: Santiago de Compostela, Santiago de Chile, Santiago de Cuba, even my hometown is named after Santiago the Greater, hence its name: Santiago de Guayaquil.

The Maps of Ship-Trap Island

Once I had my high school students read The Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell. Rainsford, the main character, is a professional hunter traveling by ship to his next hunting area, accidentally ends up in an island called Ship- Trap island. When he goes into the island he finds there are two men living in a palace in the island. One of them is a Cossack general and the other, his brutish servant.  The Cossack is called general Zaroff who is also  a game hunter but has become bored of hunting regular game and now uses the island's unique position to capture sailors from shipwrecks. He lets them go first and next after some time he hunts them down. Rainford's arrival who is worldwide famous presents Zaroff with a rare opportunity to find excitement in hunting again by hunting another hunter. Little does Zaroff know that Rainsford is The Most Dangerous Game in the World and hunting him will not be easy at all. My students enjoyed themselves at reading

How do you say NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO in English?

"Oh no! Not another power blackout!"             NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO or PESEBRE NAVIDEÑO is a tradition which consists in recreating the moment of Jesus Christ's birth with small figures representing Joseph, Mary, the shepherds and the Wise Kings. Baby Jesus is set on December 25th of course, while the other figures are placed before, usually at the beginning of December.       The translation is NATIVITY SCENE, though some people only say CHRISTMAS SCENE. This last term is a bit broad -- even an image of Santa Claus riding his sleigh falls under that description. Saying CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENE would be perhaps more appropriate.                                                                                        Merry Christmas!
