English vs Spanish: Math Operations

Besides the fact that the names are similar, there is really very little that differentiates math operations in English or Spanish.
So let us begin with that precisely:

              Spanish                      English
                Suma                       Addition
                Resta                     Substraction
           Multiplicación           Multiplication
               División                    Division

Now how we express those operations ( meaning how we explain them when we demonstrate a theorem for instance ) implies the use of words that can be distinct. In two of the four operations the translations is literal, not so in one of them (Multiplication) and in Division we have a choice. It goes like this:
Dos más dos es Cuatro (2+2=4)           Two plus two is Four   (you can also say two and two)
Tres menos dos es Uno  (3-2=1)         Three minus two is One 

It is different in Multiplication.
Cuatro por cuatro es diéciseis (4x4=16)   Four times four is Sixteen 
The symbol x is POR in Spanish but in English it represents the number of times a quantity is augmented (after all that is Multiplication really - a number increased a certain number of times). That is why we can also say:
Uno por Seis es Seis  (1x6=6)           Once Six is Six
Dos por Seis es doce (2x6=12)         Twice Six is Twelve

In Division:
Nueve dividido para Tres es Tres (9:3=3)     Nine divided by Three is Three
This can also be expressed like this:             Three goes into Nine Three times.

As usual practice is everything if we want to fix this knowledge.

The Maps of Ship-Trap Island

Once I had my high school students read The Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell. Rainsford, the main character, is a professional hunter traveling by ship to his next hunting area, accidentally ends up in an island called Ship- Trap island. When he goes into the island he finds there are two men living in a palace in the island. One of them is a Cossack general and the other, his brutish servant.  The Cossack is called general Zaroff who is also  a game hunter but has become bored of hunting regular game and now uses the island's unique position to capture sailors from shipwrecks. He lets them go first and next after some time he hunts them down. Rainford's arrival who is worldwide famous presents Zaroff with a rare opportunity to find excitement in hunting again by hunting another hunter. Little does Zaroff know that Rainsford is The Most Dangerous Game in the World and hunting him will not be easy at all. My students enjoyed themselves at reading

How do you say NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO in English?

"Oh no! Not another power blackout!"             NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO or PESEBRE NAVIDEÑO is a tradition which consists in recreating the moment of Jesus Christ's birth with small figures representing Joseph, Mary, the shepherds and the Wise Kings. Baby Jesus is set on December 25th of course, while the other figures are placed before, usually at the beginning of December.       The translation is NATIVITY SCENE, though some people only say CHRISTMAS SCENE. This last term is a bit broad -- even an image of Santa Claus riding his sleigh falls under that description. Saying CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENE would be perhaps more appropriate.                                                                                        Merry Christmas!
