Olympus Has Fallen

There is one thing that could be said about this film: if September 11 had not happened this movie had never been made. 
The problem with that attack is that in many ways it opened every one's eyes to the fact that all of us are vulnerable to be attacked if there are people with intentions evil enough to do that. Of course they must have the necessary tactical and technical expertise to set and launch such attack and the ammo to back up the whole operation. 
attacking the White House is of course a crazy idea, but crazy as it is that is the premise of this 2013 film. Olympus is a code word that refers to the White House. In order for Olympus to fall a North Korean terrorist group that is secretly helped by a traitorous American agent  (Dylan Dermott) attacks the day a South Korean emissary visits the House. The operation has been carefully planned and there are also terrorists among the security guards that accompany the visiting minister. When the attack begins chaos reigns everywhere which is when the terrorist leader (Rick Yune) successfully kidnaps the President (Aaron Eckhart) and several other government officers. His ultimate purpose is to force the Speaker of the House (Morgan Freeman) who becomes Acting President to order U.S. forces to withdraw from South Korea so North Korea can attack and take over the south by force. Also he wants to use secret codes only known by the Presidential cabinet to activate all the U.S. nuclear weapons in the American soil and transform the continental territory of the U.S. in an immense nuclear wasteland. What the terrorist do not know is that a former agent who used to be in charge of the first family's personal safety (Gerard Butler) whose name is Mike Banning will be America's only hope to rescue the President and defeat the terrorist playing their own game.
As I said an unlikely movie with an unlikely plot, but somehow it works and for thrill-seekers this movie is just perfect.
Three stars out of five for this one.

The Maps of Ship-Trap Island

Once I had my high school students read The Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell. Rainsford, the main character, is a professional hunter traveling by ship to his next hunting area, accidentally ends up in an island called Ship- Trap island. When he goes into the island he finds there are two men living in a palace in the island. One of them is a Cossack general and the other, his brutish servant.  The Cossack is called general Zaroff who is also  a game hunter but has become bored of hunting regular game and now uses the island's unique position to capture sailors from shipwrecks. He lets them go first and next after some time he hunts them down. Rainford's arrival who is worldwide famous presents Zaroff with a rare opportunity to find excitement in hunting again by hunting another hunter. Little does Zaroff know that Rainsford is The Most Dangerous Game in the World and hunting him will not be easy at all. My students enjoyed themselves at reading

How do you say NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO in English?

"Oh no! Not another power blackout!"             NACIMIENTO NAVIDEÑO or PESEBRE NAVIDEÑO is a tradition which consists in recreating the moment of Jesus Christ's birth with small figures representing Joseph, Mary, the shepherds and the Wise Kings. Baby Jesus is set on December 25th of course, while the other figures are placed before, usually at the beginning of December.       The translation is NATIVITY SCENE, though some people only say CHRISTMAS SCENE. This last term is a bit broad -- even an image of Santa Claus riding his sleigh falls under that description. Saying CHRISTMAS NATIVITY SCENE would be perhaps more appropriate.                                                                                        Merry Christmas!
