Trance: the 2013 film

One thing about this movie is how unpredictable it can be. Danny Boyle, the director of this movie has made every possible effort to make this film as unpredictable as possible.
It begins with an auctioneer called Simon (James McAvoy) an auctioneer who has met another man called Franck (Vincent Cassel)  and together have planned to steal a picture by Goya whose value in the black market is extremely high. During the carefully planned heist several things happened that were not planned. Simon who took the painting, hid it somewhere but because he he was hit on his head he forgets where exactly he put it. Franck gets furious and threatens to kill Simon aided by his henchmen but Simon has truly forgotten. In despair Franck tells Simon that he has heard hypnosis might help him remember and puts under his consideration several specialist. Simon chooses, apparently at random, Elizabeth Lamb (Rosario Dawson). Elizabeth is indeed the one who can help Simon remember where the painting is hidden.
But there is much more to Elizabeth. And also there is more also about Simon. Their motivations and how they are connected to the heist, plus its final resolution is what makes this movie different. Boyle plays with the audience a lot making the viewer believe he is going in one direction when actually he is taking another. Expect the unexpected in more than one way. Though there is no real gore and carnage there is one or two scenes that might be somewhat shocking and though there are sex scenes these are not so explicit save the one when Rosario Dawson appears naked  and we can see her glorious body (thanks Danny Boyle!). The final scenes reveal again that what we were seeing was another playful and clever use of perspective with one of the characters at the end about to make a decision that we never see happening (an open ending of sorts)
If you know Boyle's work you'll enjoy this movie, but also if you're not because it has a lot of merits of its own including the plot that is consistent and well done.
Four stars out of five for this one.
