Batman and Superman: Not the First Time
So Warner has finally understood this is potentially a huge moneymaker. Taking so long for something so evident surely says one thing about them: they are not very bright, are they?
Well, having said that. This would be indeed the first time that Batman and Superman will work (or fight?) together in the big screen. Nevertheless it is not the first time they have collaborated in other media and their adventures can be found in comic books and animated movies.
The Dark Knight Returns which was first a story told by Frank Miller and them made an animated movie. It's really a Batman story set in the future after Batman has retired. Gotham has been invaded by a gang called The Mutants who cannot be defeated so Batman decides to reappear but he is different now, more ruthless, obssessed and even sadistic. Superman is sent to stop him and take him to prison but Batman is ready to take part in a fight that is perhaps more meaningful than any other in comic book history. Calmly the Bat awaits his former ally in Crime Alley, the place where his parents were murdered. If he is to die, he will die there but before that Superman will find out that all his powers are nothing against an opponent that is at the same time incredibly resourceful and a master tactician.
Public Enemies tells the story of what happens when Lex Luthor becomes president of the United States and declares Superman, and later Batman, public enemies. Together they have to face not only some of their greatest opponents sent by Luthor but also heroes as well. To see them working together to defeat Solomon Grundy, Mongul, Major Force, Captain Atom, Hawkman and Captain Marvel is a real treat.
In Absolute Power the question to what would happen if Batman and Superman went wrong? Enemies from the Legion of Superheroes of the 30th century travel back in time and alter history for their own purposes. As a result, Batman and Superman were raised by those villains instead. The world is subjugated by their combined power. Seeing a rogue Superman fighting Uncle Sam and Wonder Woman, well that is something that deserves to be seen.
The Dark Knight Returns and Public Enemies have been made into animated videos and if you want to see even more than that, see the trailer for the then never-made Superman-Batman movie. It puts them together against the likes of Lex Luthor and Two Face.
There is plenty of material for those who cannot wait for the movie to be made. You just sit back in your couch and see what is there. You won't regret it.
