Star Wars: More Movies are Coming
¡Por fin! Let's face it: George Lucas is already too old and too tired for making more Star Wars movies or any movie for that matter. His last effort Red Devils did not receive the appreciation he felt it deserved. And he had confessed it once and again that making any of the Star Wars was every time, a titanic effort.
We know that producing a movie, even a cheap one, is not easy. But still...how can you please a geek? How can you ask him not to dream or keep pushing for his dream movies to be made? That can't be. Lucas started a snowball in the seventies and then he wanted to walk away from it leaving us with the desire for more. That was a no-no.
Of course his position is understandable. He is no longer the young visionary director that filmed Star Wars. He probably wants and needs to rest and enjoy the rewards of his work. We could not really ask for more, could we?
Luckily, Lucas decided to take steps to make sure that his legacy would endure. First, he named a new president of Lucasfilm then he sold his company and the Star Wars franchise to Walt Disney Co. for the amount of 4 billlion dollars. Are the geeks happy now? Well, yes and no.
Of course we are all excited for the announcement of not one but three new movies to be filmed. And this time we get to know what happened after Episode VI because the first new film is tentatively called Episode VII of course, and then there will be Episodes VIII and IX as well.
Of course, there are problems. First is this thing about Disney being the buyer. The same feeling we all had when Disney purchased Marvel. Disney is a family-oriented company, but Marvel is not necessarily the same thing (there are stories where Hulk, for example, loses control and actually kills some of the Avengers). In the "Disney" mainframe, where does an out-of-control Anakin Skywalker fit? Has anyone forgotten that once he killed all the members of the Jedi Academy, many of who were only trainées in his early teens and even younger?
Then there is this thing about the three first episodes not having the same "magic" that Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi all had. Who guarantees Disney will pick up the right man for the job? Lucas has already announced that he will not be involved either as director or producer. Who then will answer the call? There are many names and in the end for me it only makes sense that Lucas's old good friend and partner in crime takes on the franchise to let us see what else the Star Wars universe has to offer.
Of course, that friend's name is none other that Steven Spielberg.
